Background Information :

State Board Rules and Regulations §0520-1-2-.08 provide “all athletic practice within the regular hours of any school day must be approved on an annual basis by the local board of education; such action must be reflected in the minutes of the local board of education. All approved athletic practice during the regular hours of any school day shall conform to the same rules, regulations, and seasons as corresponding athletic practice outside the school day.” After meeting with the coaches of the respective sports last year, I am confident that athletic practice during the school day will not materially affect a student’s educational program. The coaches stated that concessions will be made when athletics interferes with academics.

Staff Recommendation:

For the 2014 – 2015 school year, I recommend that the Board approve allowing athletic practice during the school day. Football and basketball are the only sports that practice during the school day. All other sports practice after the school day.
